marketing by unprofessionals

i've heard from many an ad agency acquaintance that the whole consumer-generated trend will eventually die off because consumers can't do our jobs as well as we can. here's proof that's wrong.

ghost bikes are bikes painted white which mark the spot where a cyclist was killed. the visual is haunting and, unlike roadside tributes, a bike locked to a post won't wilt or get removed. it's inexpensive, easy for people to duplicate, and generates a ton of PR. most importantly, no matter how many times i drive past one (this was taken yesterday at western and logan), i drive a little more cautiously. when i ride my bike past one, i keep my eyes a little more open. the group who organizes it say, "our goal is to make our group unnecessary."
