prior to every Beloved Spartan game this year, fans have received an email reminding them to "raise their SHIELD" for michigan state. SHIELD is the kind of acronym that only a university or congressional subcommittee could come up with. it stands for Sportsmanship, Honor, Integrity, Enthusiasm, Leadership, and Dignity.
as far as acronyms go, it doesn't approach my favorite - the SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America). in an effort to be even lesser-known, the organization now goes by "Barbershop Harmony Society."
nevertheless, the Beloved Spartans lost on the last play of the game last night, and i can't help but think if the fans weren't so busy showing things like Honor and Leadership, we could've cheered our team on more successfully.
next time, i'd suggest an acronym fans can remember. like D: Don't let iowa score on the last play.
