ties and the loosening thereof

one of the ways i get along with my family so well is, i'm not around enough for them to dislike me much. and one of the ways i stay away from them is by doing things like serve on the board of EPIC (Engaging Philanthropy, Inspiring Creatives). at EPIC, we work with creative professionals to help non-profit organizations market themselves.

a while back, i led an effort to help Barrel of Monkeys. (that's our handiwork shown above.) as i always say to friends, "Barrel of Monkeys is an ensemble of artist-educators that creates an alternative learning environment within the Chicago Public School system. The program allows children to celebrate their personal voices through creative writing workshops and in-school performances of their work. The curriculum teaches the kids how to write an argument, a narrative, a dialogue, and, most importantly, helps give them the self-confidence to believe in themselves and the power of their stories."

sometimes, i leave out that last part, just to keep things sounding casual.

anyway, if you've read this far, you must be truly dedicated. as it so happens, we're looking for some dedicated people to come to the big Barrel of Monkeys fundraiser, Fancy Schmancy. it's this friday at the chicago cultural center, and it promises to be far more fun than whatever you currently have planned.

i encourage you - no, i beseech you - please attend. it's for the children.
